About the Circle of Life Experience
The Circle of Life Experience is a natural destination designed for family connection and empowerment. The Circle of Life Experience objectives include:
- Practice gardening without pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides.
- Use a variety of permaculture principles and practices along with more traditional science-based growth methods to cultivate a chemical-free food source for people, birds, butterflies, and all living things.
- Compost using cut grass, plant, shrub, and pruned tree trimmings. Seek out mulch from local tree trimming services to help build and enrich soil.
- Offer easily accessible collected and decomposed seaweed and sand free to City of Fort Lauderdale residents to enrich soil with beneficial sea micronutrients.
- Offer volunteer and mentoring opportunities to Master Gardeners and community members to assist with food forest and butterfly garden maintenance and grooming, planting and propagation, special care of native and non-native food bearing trees, shrubs, and plants.
- Provide monthly Circle of Life Experience hourlong guided tours and related experiential learning opportunities free to the public.
Butterfly Garden
The butterfly garden contains a variety of approximately 45 native and non-native host and nectar plants grown in semi-shade, shade, and bright light environments. The garden attracts a wide variety of seasonal, migrating, and local butterflies. Some species stop by for a short time while others call our garden home.
Food Forest
Food forests connect communities with nature, provide a serene environment in which to experience the awesomeness of nature and the interconnectedness of all living things. Trees of different sizes produce fruit and other edibles while their shade supports growing a wide variety of greens, fresh herbs, and berries. In addition, trees, shrubs, and plants improve air quality by taking carbon from the atmosphere. Connecting schools to food forests, children learn about the food they eat, nutritional values, food preparation, and growing your own food as well as how to select the right plants, trees, and shrubs for the right place.
